Painting cabs takes time if you want a good job. If you don't want to invest the time, then don't start as they will look worse than they do now.

You will need to sand, apply a good primer, sand again, paint with an enamel (acrylic or oil), sand again, and paint again. The sanding is important to get a smooth finish.

Yes most people do not know how to paint. They get crappy advice from home shows. Hometime gave very bad advice and showed bad technique this week.
