painting techniques on textured walls

Hi all,

Me & my husband got this '70s house with a glossy, dirty white paint on weirdly textured walls. The texture looks like it has been done by dragging a rag over the walls. I have started painting some rooms - I prime first (to get rid of the glossy finish), and then use a flat color (Ralph Lauren satin).
I am thinking about experimenting with some two-color techniques (ragging, sponging, etc.), or doing one of the RL looks, but the example room pictures I have seen are all done on flat walls. I can't imagine how, for example, the RL suede technique would look on a textured wall. Has anyone experimented with textured walls & different finishes before, and if so, what advice could you give me?
