Painting "textured" ceilings

Just purchased a home that has a water stain on the "textured" ceiling in one of the bedrooms. The previous owner repaired the leak in the roof, but never bothered to re-paint the ceiling that is "textured." By textured, I mean it has the "shot on styrofoam BB-type combined with white latex paint" ceiling that, in my expereince, defies painting with brush or roller without knocking off the "BBs." Is this a do-it-yourself job or do I need to hire an expert? What tools do I need?
