It's true that a high-gloss paint will show the defects. I tried one room with that and was disappointed in the results. However, I used a rag-rolling technique on another -- primer, flat latex in white, followed by rag-rolling in a satin cream, and it was a knockout. I did a third room without the primer, using two coats of the flat latex where the dark paneling showed through, followed by the rag-rolling and you couldn't tell the difference between the two.
