painting over wood table

I have already made the decision to paint over my cherry table. I am painting it black and I want the edges sanded to look distressed.
Do I need a primer if the table is down to the bare wood? I don't want the paint to bleed through all the wood, but if I prime then when I sand the edges the white shows.
Also what kind of paint would you suggest? I really like the looks of a latex semi-gloss.
