Painting over color-coated stucco

Posted by Dan Rugg on September 25th, 2002 06:01 PM

Our house was recently sandblasted and re-plastered with color-coated stucco. Unfortunately, the color-coat is not meeting our expectations (we wanted a more vibrant yellow, which we can only get with paint).

Our problem is that we are being told by the stucco manufacturer (La Habra Stucco) that we can’t paint over color-coat because the stucco needs room to “breathe.” To make matters worse, we also applied Thompson’s Water Sealer over the stucco (about 4 weeks after it was done), and we are getting different stories as to whether or not it should have been applied.

My painter (friend) tells me that he can’t paint now due to the Water Sealer. The Stucco Manufacturer is telling us to “fog-coat”, however they can’t give us the color we want. We desperately want to change the color of our house as soon as possible.

Any suggestions? Any help would be appreciated. We are located in Southern California if that makes a difference.
