Painting over a brass-plated bed?

I have a slightly beat-up brass-plated or brass
lacquered bed that I'd like to sponge-paint. The bed
is *not* real brass, but I don't know the difference
between brass plating and a brass lacquer finish, or
if this matters in painting over the surface. I notice
Henry in MI had some suggestions several weeks ago for
painting over a brass-plated fireplace. Should I use
the same method of sanding with 320-grit sandpaper?
And should I stick with enamel paints? Many thanks
in advance for any tips!
