Painting old fireplaces

Posted by Dawn on September 10th, 2000 10:05 PM

Hi all,

My sister just moved into a very old home and the fireplace
is not useable but very much the centre of attention
in her living room. The fireplace and hearth are very
stained with what looks like a very oily substance.
We have tried to clean up all the brick and the opening
with moratic acid and it has not helped we have decided
to paint the brick white to be the same color as the
room. Is there a specific type of paint to use to paint
this 40 year old brick? I don't think the fireplace will
ever be used as a fire burning fireplace again as it is
very inefficent. What type of paint should be used and
how long will it last?
