According to

Painting Vinyl Floors

Q: Can this be done? I know it probably isn't cost effective, but I need a quick fix for about a year or two - just till I can get the floor of my dreams!

A: Yes, it can. My wife investigated this recently and found that if you seal the floor properly with primer/sealer then use a enamel-based paint, it can be done.

Go to your local paint or home center and ask what is best for your budget and needs.

personal note: I have a friend that painted her's to appear as terracotta tiles and
she said with several layers of urethane, there is no wear for a long time.

Just thought you'd like another opinion.
