Hi, marian. As lawnboy suggests, painting a laminate like Formica is not a good or safe practice. It can be done and will look good for a short while but soon the paint will chip and flake. Then every opening becomes a point where food products and liquids can grow bacteria.

If your laminate is in that bad shape, the chances are good that you have at least some water damage to the substrate (the plywood, particle board or chip board that the laminate is mounted on). If this is already the case, your counter top will deteriorate that much faster. It is much better, faster, and in the long run, cheaper to just replace the counter top. If you just want to change the color, a pro can remove and replace the laminate.
