I painted the kitchen cabinets in out last house which we are currently renting out. I had excellent results. I used a semi gloss paint over a good primer. I first took all the doors and hardware off, sanded all the frames and doors, primed with a good primer, lightly sanded again. I then used a paint pad and used a brush to catch any drips and get in the corners. A paint pad can leave a very smooth surface, better than a good brush in my experience. For the doors, i decided to buy myself a automotive spray gun and to spray all the doors in the backyard. I have had many positive comments on how good it all looks.
good luck
