I painted our formica cabinets and it turned out great! It's very time consuming, but the results are worth it. First, scuff up the surface with really rough sandpaper. Prime with Zinsser 1-2-3 (this is a water based product, and is easy clean-up--it's also the only product that will stick reliably). Then paint with whatever paint you want (I recommend a very high quality acrylic). I also did some decorative painting on mine. Then give the cabinets 2 coats of polyurethane ( I used a semi-matte finish--make sure you get a polyurethane you can use over acrylic paint--I used "Behr" brand water based from Home Depot). These cabinets have now lasted for three years without one scratch. Good luck!
