Painting/Cedar Shakes

Posted by Ray Gallagher on April 19th, 1998 06:00 PM

My house (1957, split-level) has cedar shakes that were painted - not stained - by the former owners.
In some areas on the west and south walls the paint readily brushes off while on the east and north walls it seems pretty sound.
Since it was painted with a dark gray latex, I guess we will have to paint also - only problem is that it is a dark gray.
I'm thinking of (1) having the walls pressure washed to remove the bulk of the loose paint from the shakes, (2) applying an il-based primer, and a coat of light gray.
Anypone had experience with this? Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated!
Thanks, Ray Gallagher
