You will need to sand the cabinets and use a tack cloth on them before priming. It is best to use an oil based primer. Alklyd enamel paint is best to use for a smooth looking finish. You might want to tint your primer so you won't need to paint as many coats. Enamel paint takes longer to dry to allow 24 hours between coats. You might also want to seal them with a non-yellowing sealer to prevent chipping.
