I did this a few years ago and have had pretty good results although it was a lot of work.
I also washed and sanded the cabinets. I then painted on at least 4 coats of white primer and followed up with 2 coats of white semi-gloss paint. I used a foam roller to achieve a really smooth finish. I also soaked all my hardwar in turpentine to clean it. I filled in hardware holes and replaced with wood shaker knobs which I painted sage green. The kitchen looks much better but white cabinets need to be cleaned regularly and you have to be careful not to chip them. Also, I used Sherwin Williams paint. Good luck I hope this helps!
