In terms of time and effort and cost of spackle, paint and etc., new drywall is an option you really should revisit. You don't have to take the old wall down, just overlay with 1/4" (or 1/2) rock like you would with paneling. There is not much in the way of remodeling that is easier than drywalling....most people avoid it because they don't know anything about it. Just trundle on down to Home Depot and learn. Just don't get carried away like I did and start revamping your whole house with Santa Fe style nichos, bullnose corners replacing every square corner bead, plant ledges, kiva-style entertainment center.....I spent two days trying to steam off some old fabric type wall paper that had drywall patches under it when I could have just layed new rock over it, taped it and textured it in the time it took to clean up the gluey mess from stripping the wall paper. good luck, kizmet
