Depending on what type of effect you want for the furniture, you can base coat the wood in any red tone (your preference), let it dry and then paint a flat black latex paint over the red, let dry and after it is completed painted and dry, take some fine sandpaper and sand the wood, whether it be all over or only cetain spots. The red will come thru. Hope this helps.
