Bill, we do forgive you for buying a house with interior painted stonework. Chemical strippers would seem to be the best choice. Citristrip and Peel Away are my choices of strippers. Citristrip will probably work fine but might be messy to clean up. Try cleaning up with water on a test section to see how bad this is. Check with the guys at for info on Peel Away. Since you can remove any residue with white vinegar, it may be easier to clean up.
