Paint on wood

About the only way the paint is going to come out is to sand the wood thoroughly. If the raw wood was painted it has penetrated the pores and will be there until sanded out. If it had been a case where paint was put over an old shellac, lacquer or varnish finish there might have been some hope for removal. Have you considered repainting? That seem to be the style now.
