Delilah, it sounds like you are at the point where it may be easier to replace the drywall, if you are SURE it is drywall. Do not even think about using a paint stripper on drywall. Other liquids, like water can cause more problems if the bottom layer of the drywall is not sealed, even if the top is. Really, hanging drywall is not hard. The ceiling can be tough unless you get some help handling the heavy sheets. The mudding and taping and sanding will be messy but not hard either. You might think about better moldings too. Mark locations for the moldings if you are going to reuse them. Don't forget to put a new coat or 2 of sealer like Zinsser's B-I-N on the new drywall. Drywall is pretty cheap, too.
