Paint After Spraying

You can purchase a hand operated texture sprayer from the likes of Home Depot or Menards. It operates much like the old time insect pump sprayers. The texture comes in a gallon container for about $10 and the sprayer is about $39. This method gives excellent results.
There are also textures available in spray cans, but I think they are too limited to do an entire ceiling.
Regardless of which method you use, I would paint after spraying to prevent humidity and moisture from deteriorating the texture.
Good Luck!
