Hi, Linda. Since you have a practice piece, try this. Paint the raised paper with the "top" color and let it dry. Then paint it with the wall color in small sections--a couple of feet or so at a time. Fold the corners of a rag in, then fold the corners of that in again, and again until you have your rag into a ball with a smooth face and wipe the wall colored part off the high spots. This should work, but please let us all know. It might work better if the wall color was water based and the "top" color was oil.
