Yes Tom, the previous message was from us. When we say raise the house, we mean just that, raise it to a two story, fill in the crawl and raise the first floor to the second. We would have a garage and den on the first floor, also since the house has electric heat, we would convert to oil, either forced air or baseboard. It is a summer home, but we would like to live there for part of the year upon retirement. We will replace the carpeting and wash down the walls with a bleach & water solution, hopefully this will kill the mildew. The dampness is so bad, the sink cabinet, which is pressed wood, needs to be replaced. To raise the house, it would be jacked up, the existing block foundation removed, since it is 8" block, and replaced with 10" which is code. Since that has to be done, it makes sense to put in french drains and tar and insulate the part of the foundation that is under ground. The crawl will be filled in with stone and concreted over. We have been trying to dry the house out, but every weekend we are there it has been RAINING- - - I'M SICK OF RAIN. We plan to remove the insulation in the crawl, since the joists have to be replaced, and we suspect it is retaining moisture, What do you mean, re-use & cover the insulation. Put the rigid insulation on first, then the batting? Wouldn't the rigid insulation have to be cut to fit between the joists anyway? Would the plastic sheating under the house cause moisture to develop between the insulation & plastic & cause puddles? We cleaned out the drains, and what a mess. We hope to install seamless gutters with covers and divert the drains away from the house, which should aleviate some problems. We really appreciate all your help, and look forward to your answers Camille
