Opening a Wall

Posted by Tracy on January 26th, 2000 10:52 PM

My husband and I would like to have a wall opened up. An 8 or 9 foot opening would be ideal.
We have had four contractors come in, (prices varying extensively) to have it done and then cased with similar moulding to what we have.

We have been told by some that a 6 foot opening is the max unless we have a steel header installed ($$). Others said two 12" wood headers would support an 8 foot opening.

At this point we're considering doing it ourselves because we're unsure whose opinions to trust.
Does anyone know:
1) Where on the internet we can look at the codebook on the header regulation?
2) Where can we buy the headers from?
3) Where we can buy the temporary supports for the ceiling while we're cutting the 2x4s?
We appreciate any input you may have. Thank you!
