The neutral and ground are SUPPOSED to be at the same potential. Code generally allows a neutral bonded to ground in certain situations.

What's allowed in one place isn't necessarily right somewhere else. It all depends on what code calls for in your area. If the inspector says it's OK then go for it. Either way it's not a deal breaker. It's a minor change and costs very little to fix if it doesn't meet code.
