Try this:

1. Frame the opening for the stairs in the ceiling.
2. Square up the attic stairs frame and nail a wood strip across the frame to keep it square.
3. Remove the stair portion and door from the attic stairs frame -- watch out for those springs!
4. Push the attic stairs frame into the attic.
5. Screw wood strips to the edges of the framing in the ceiling. The attic stairs frame will rest on these strips so you will need to place shims under (above) the strips so that the frame will be flush with the finished ceiling.
6. Put a ladder under the opening, crawl into the attic, place the attic stairs frame in the framed opening, center and shim the stairs frame in the opening, and nail/screw the attic stairs frame to the ceiling joists/framing.
7. Remove the wood strips from the ceiling opening and stairs frame.
8. Re-attach the stairs and door to the attic stairs frame.
9. Replace the springs (you may have to do this from the attic). Pull the door shut with a rope.

That's it!
