Sometimes it is too difficult to accomplish the mitered end and the piece keeps cracking when you cut it etc. One other way I have done it is to just hold up a scrap and trace the moulding contour to the end of the piece and then just cut it square with a jig saw. You end up with the exact same look as Henry's except you don't have to miter it. The drawback is that you end up with some end grain, but I sand it and stain or paint it and it doesn't stand out. This is a little bit difficult to describe, it is sort of like coping, without the miter.
