First of all the veggie oil should go. It will turn rancid over a few days. The appropriate oil to use is medical grade mineral oil. Wal-Mart or any pharmacy carries it. It will never turn rancid. As far as a stain goes this is about as safe as it comes. If you have some scrap wood left over mix about 1 tablespoon of Draino crystals ( 100% lye) with 1 cup of warm water. Wear appropriate gloves...will take the hide off if you know what I mean. Mix well and you can apply it directly to the wood. Experiment with lye to water ratios and time left on the wood for the color you want. The lye reacts with the tannin in the wood. Wipe the area with a rag. Apply straight white vinegar to neutralize the lye and rince the area well with water. Allow to dry and apply the mineral oil. This works very well as I have used this technique.
