I do all that he stated but I bought a long handled vinyl tile scraper that works great for removing the texture, popcorn, or whatever from the ceiling while standing on the "floor". It has a blade about 12 inches in length and set at the proper angle it will nicely remove the texturing after it has been saturated.
The area you must be careful about is NOT to damage or gouge the drywall. Set the angle nicely and move slowly and easily. If you gouge or damage the rocks skin, you have extra work to do.
