A sealant is designed to lightly penetrate and seal the wood from loosing or gaining moisture. It creates a barrier. The mineral spirits on the other hand do not, It can remove a barrier and get absorbed into the wood like a sponge. If this floor is the original floor from the 1800's it probably has very little if any sealant on it now. So the likelihood of the mineral sprits getting absorbed into the wood is greater. It would take alot more mineral spirits to do the job you are advising upon because of this absorption therefore the wood in itself becomes a very bad safety hazard for a number of years if done by your instructions. You have given this person very bad advise, if you think about it very hard and keep this persons welfare at the top of the list you will understand where I am coming from.
If not you are criminal and should be banned from any board that has to do with home improvement. The person comes first, the job second.
