The 1 thing all 3 of our furnace salesmen agreed on was that DC motors run cheaper (use less electricity) than AC motors. DC motors also seem to facilitate variable fan speed better than AC, though noone could explain why.
In dry winter Minnesota, where humidifiers were previously important, fewer people are now including humidifiers on new furnaces in newer homes, because of tighter weatherproof sealing that might cause mold.
