old tile replacement

Hello all,

I've been trying to restore my bathroom to it's 1927 style. We've gotten the new tile and adhesive off and found remarkabley preserved 3"x6" subway tiles underneath. We need to replace a few and have had NO luck in finding a match at several stores here in Chicago. As a last resort I've decided to remove the top row of tile, which I can replace with a different color without destroying the overall effect. However, I wanted to know if anyone else ever had this problem and how they dealt with it.

Please don't tell me to gut a re-tile the whole thing.
