Old tile removal with tar paper as a base on wood floor

I removed an old tile floor and found tar paper underneath it. Some of it came off, but most seemed glued to the floor. I would like to know how to get it off the wood floor. I would appreciate any help on what chemicals to use to strip it off the floor. The house is a 1905 Victorian type home and the tile may be about 50 year old or more. Any help would make a difference - thanks.
