old thermostat

I was told that this old thermostat had to be left on heat or cool, but never off because the pilot on the heater would go out. My father had one of the largest heating and air conditioning companies in Houston and my husband is in the profession as well, certified universal and no one has heard of this before. Is there anything on an old thermostat with a mercury switch that you could change and have the pilot on the heater go out or did some tech give faulty advise to keep from explaining the exact cause of the pilot going out.
