Hi, Bob. What is usually tried is to just put masking tape on an area slightly larger than the label, refinish around the label except for the last coat of finish. Sometimes works, sometimes doesn't. You could try sanding with the same sometimes results. Any stripper will probably remove the label.
An alternate is that some replacement labels are still available. The mail order woodworkers supply catalogs of people like Woodcraft show them and they might be on their web site (www.woodcraft.com).
