You have the right idea, adjusting the hinges. Your house has probably settled some in its 70+ years - the floors, walls and ceilings are probably not as level/plumb as they used to be. Check the door frame (where the hinges are) for plumb - and then check the door itself. Adjust accordingly.

You may have to invest in a doorstop - that's part of the character of the house.
