Old hot water heat system

Posted by Bill Bracken on March 3rd, 2001 02:21 PM

My house was built in 1962, and we replaced the boiler last year. The problem is the old baseboard heating units. Seems that one of the previous homeowners removed the middle or "top" deflector from each room. The plummer who replaced the boiler said some people do this in a misguided attempt at gaining more warmth. He stated that these deflectors force the heat inward and are vital to maximizing the efficency of the system. What I've noticed is that without them, everthing collects inside on the fins and the appearance is terrible. Does anyone know where I can buy replacement covers for the baseboard units, without having to replace the whole radiator?
