old chair finish

Posted by Dave on January 9th, 2000 05:32 PM

I have a rocking chair who's finnish consists more of dirt than finish. It is fairly old (it was my Grandparents), but I doubt if it is antique. The back of the chair has some wonderful inlay work that is barely visable because of all the grime. I have tried to clean it with naptha (no luck), and alcohol (better but very slow). What would you recomend I use to clean this chair, and once it is clean, how should I treat the finish?

The exhisting finish may be laquer by the looks of the crackling in some areas. In the seat and arms of the chair, the finish apears to have been worn (or melted) off over the years.

Thanks for your thoughts.
