Way back when those old houses used to have sheets of burlap glued to the walls. This was done to stop all the cracking of the plaster when the first remodel job was performed. You can go ahead and lay a new layer 1/4" drywall over the wall if your trim allows you to.If trim is thick enough or if its inbetween two walls or no trim is involved.A new layer of drywall is less time to mud than trying to smooth out the mess i'm sure your looking at. Also a new layer of drywall will not bring back the old cracks.
