make a diagram with string or spray paint the dimensions of your patio.

Dig down into the earth a good four to five inches. Remove the soil.

Consider your edging or boundary method. Do you want to install the lawn edging material or install brick edging to keep the stuff all together and tight.

Now, lay down that special fabric that lets water through and keeps weeds out. Lay this down over the bottom.

Now, fill in with sand and screed it level. Then lightly spray down with water to compact it. Now add some more. Water down again.

Do not add sand any heigher than the height of your stones and the height of the turf. This way the stones and ground will be level.

Now, lay the stones in the sand in the method or patterns you want. Now, dump alot of sand all around the stones and with a broom sweep it between the stones. Water again so that the sand again melts down. Keep adding sand and watering until the sand and stones are even.

Make sure your border whether stones or brick or landscape edging is good and tight to keep the stones in and in shape.

This works and is easy to maintain.
