Many thanks to all of you responding. We appreciate your input more than we (at least I can say). It's been tough, this do-it-yourself stuff, but we've had good feelings with whatever we've accomplished. We've used shims elsewhere -- mainly to get the bookcases, refrigerator and other stuff level. Jack's a little nervous about ripping out the casing -- he thinks the entire house will fall down, but I've pretty much assured him it won't happen. We'll let you know how door number two goes!
