Use a gas fireplace that vents the exhaust outside, not a ventless unit, as I think these are junk.
If I were doing a new house or renovation right now I would consider it a requirement to wire it for all potential future network, automation, audio/video distribution and speaker wiring. Even if you don't use it all, it is nice to know it is there if you need it and it adds value to your house for re-sale.
I would put at least one "all-in-one" combination cable (link below) in every wall and send each to a home position in a utility closet or service area/basement. I would run "in wall" quality speaker wires to all logical points and I would even run 5 wire thermostat wire to various spots just in case you want to add separate heating zones in the future.
