Oak Stair Treads

I want to replace my carpeted stairs with oak treads and painted risers. The underlying 2x12s go underneath the supports for the spindles(which I would rather not remove).

What choices of materials do I have? do I have to use the 1 1/2in thick treads or can I use thinner oak and attach bull nose trim?

Any Ideas would be helpful.
