OAK FURNITURE REFINISHING AND STAINING

I am in the middle of a project to refinish an oak kitchen table and chairs. The old stain and varathane came off relatively easily and sanded to a good looking light colour. I now want to stain the wood a darker colour and am having trouble getting the old wood to absorb the stain. I have tried a Min Wax Wood Conditioner but it does not appear to help much. Does anyone have a suggestion about a type of stain or conditioner that will help me penetrate the old oak with the new stain?
