Julie, instead of removing the staples, if there really are thousands which it probably seems like there are, I'd just hammer them flat. But they're really not that hard to remove. Slide a large screw driver under them and lift. It helps if you hold the screw driver by the blade and put your thumb on the staple and lift. But don't leave staples with little pieces of padding under them. Have fun!
