Non paintable caulk

I just came from an estimate where a regular customer of mine had her bathroom remodeled. The guys that intalled the tub surround used an unpaintable caulk and now I'm expected to apply a wallcovering in this room. I'm not certain that I can get the caulking off the drywall, nor am I certain that I can get it cleaned up off the surround. Someone once told me apply a coat of rubber cement over the caulk and that would allow paint to bond to it. I've never tried it, and I'm uncertain that wallpaper would bond to it.

Any thoughts?
