More than likely it is the exchange tank. Many times there is a pressure problem in the system. The best way to fix it is to replace the exchange tank with a bladder and ensure a balancing and air venting system is installed. Somewhere you may be losing water pressure and the exchange tank is getting low, making popping sounds. You could also try bleeding the air from the system and refilling with water. Also, check the pressure release valve for proper functioning.
