No Stud for Garage Door Opener

We have a drywalled garage and are trying to install a Craftmen chain garage door opener. The only "stud" in the wall above the garage door is about six inches away from the centreline of the garage door. The ceiling of our garage is about four feet above the door (kind of cathedral style) so we cannot do a ceiling mount.

We have installed a 2x4 that runs from where the stud is to the other side of the centreline about the same distance and have secured the board with hollow-wall plugs on that side with 4inch screws securing the side of the board in the stud. Considering the amount of tension exerted by the opener, what can we do to reinforce the board to the drywall?
