you will need to scuff up the surface with sandpaper. Sand in the direction of the grain and just lightly do this to make the surface rough.

Then apply a good quality of primer like Zinzer BIN or the likes. Apply several light coats instead of few heavy coats. Allow to dry.

Then apply your finish coats about two.

This will work.
