I had the same thing happen at my house after doing some plumbing work under my sink. What can cause it as in my case was basically hose placement. The outlet from the air gap sagged to much and so the water had an easier route out of the air gap then trying to go through the hose that connected to the drain pipe. Also clogged drains themselves can cause a backup. If my garbage disposal is not clean and flushed out good after food is put down it, it sometimes causes the airgap to flow water. Good luck
